Today I’ve been listening to my eleven year old grand daughter and her friend play. They have been having a wonderful time, laughing non stop and shrieking with surprise and anticipation. No they have not been watching a DVD or cartoons – for once. Today two things were unusual – firstly it was a sunny day (not to be taken for granted in a UK summer) and secondly they were playing outside. In fact they have been playing all day in the garden with bubbles, simple soap bubbles; who can blow the biggest ones and how high will they fly? I am delighted that they are still so young and innocent – getting so much fun from such a simple toy. It gives me hope that children can still play naturally without technology and keep themselves amused with simple things. But can we? One of the ways to enjoy your life and to keep a marriage or partnership thriving is to take pleasure in the simple things in life together such as walking by the sea, strolling in the park, watching the sunset and so on. Most of us have a rich and full life – too full sometimes – and we are given an overdose of visual and sound sensations from TV so give the TV a break and take time to sit and read together, or talk, or do a crossword puzzle or get out the playing cards. You’ll also find it brings you closer – there’s nothing so binding for a couple than sharing some quiet time together without the barrage of other people’s noise. Where are the leads – I’m off for a walk with my husband and our dogs as the sun’s still out!
