It’s been a mixed week here in London – first we had the wonderful and exhilarating news that London had won the bid for the 2012 Olympics then the very next day we were reeling from the blast of terrorist bombs. The destruction of innocent lives and the repercussions to family and friends has thrown the country into shock. As ever when there has been a disaster most of us feel quite helpless. As I listened to the constant wail of ambulance sirens I thought “next time I come back I will be a doctor” for doctors can do something useful when people are in physical distress. Unless we are trained what can we do? Bob Geldof’s recent Life 8 initiative gave me an insight. I realised that we can all do something. By creating a home filled with love and peace, by teaching our children to give and share, to think compassionately of others we can create a generation of people who will look after the needs of the rest of the world. This in itself will create a caring world where the dark thoughts of resentment and hatred are less likely to fester into the terrorist activities that have blighted us over the last few years. Any change in the way of the world has to start in the home and we are the movers and shakers in our own world so we can begin the change and we can begin it now.
