II am an absolute Christmas fan. I love the shopping, the buzz in the malls, the Christmas music, the old movies, the fun of present wrapping and all the razmataz that goes with the commercial Christmas. I love even more the fact that we are thinking of others. People often say to me “aren’t Christmas cards a waste of money and too commercial” Well I don’t agree. When I write my cards I visualise the person I am writing to and just for that moment I am completely focused on them. On my list there are many old friends from different countries I have met in my travels and Christmas is often the only occasion when I take time to think of them. Within the family too it’s a great opportunity to gather together and celebrate just being together. We make more effort at these special holiday times, we try harder to please and we put ourselves out to be sociable with other family members. I just love it when we have the entire family sitting down to lunch and I fall exhaustedly into my chair and out come the silly jokes from the crackers and we make ourselves look foolish with paper hats. I love the opportunity to celebrate, to get together and to share. So this year don’t let the commercialism spoil Christmas for you. Give the children what you can then just relax – the giving is enough – you don’t have to satisfy their every demand. Rather focus on creating a fun atmosphere that you can share and enjoy rather than put too many demands on yourself. Don’t try to be perfect and allow yourself to just about get it right! After all the true focus of Christmas is love - for that was Jesus’ message – just love. Take every opportunity to hug and show each other how much you love – that is the greatest of all Christmas gifts and that’s the bit I love the best.
