Couples Corner - December 2005

Stress
Do you ever get completely overwhelmed by the pressures of your life?  Not enough time with the children; rushing between school drop offs and work; pressure at work with deadlines to meet; just too much work to do and too little time; difficulties in your marriage that need attention; financial worries; parental pressures and so on.  If you never get to screaming pitch then you are very unusual and very lucky!!  Most of us are juggling our lives and occasionally we drop the balls.  Recently I reached the point when I wanted to throw them all out of the window!  But we have to keep going so what can we do to retain our own personal calm, to stop our blood pressure rising and our heart racing.

Here is a short technique I have found really useful.  You can do this at any time of the day and it takes just a few moments. Breathe in deeply four times; visualise a huge mountain and feel its strength.  Let yourself take in the strength to manage the problems you faced.  Now see a clear stream flowing fast down the mountainside – notice it goes around and over the boulders in its path and just know that you are going to go with the flow of life and not force the pace.  Sweep your shoulders with your hands and hold the intention of releasing all the boulders of responsibility that you hold there – visualise them falling off and see how light you now feel.

Do the people around you irritate and upset you?
We don’t choose the people who we work with and sometimes we can find them a bit irritating and annoying.   Even our family members can be intrusive and irritating at times.  We live in small homes in Hong Kong and sometimes everyone seems to be in everyone else’s space.   For years I have used and passed onto my clients a simple visualisation that they have found incredibly useful for keeping your space/your energy field free and protected from the emotional upsets and intrusive ways of the people around you.

You need to use your imagination for this.  See a very large egg in front of you – its about two foot taller than you are and wider.  Step into this egg - you can imagine a door if you like - and close the door behind you.  You are now protected and insulated from the negativity of those around you.  Anything they say will bounce off the walls of the egg.  Only kind words and thoughts can get through!  Visualise this anytime you are about to meet someone who can rile you and see the difference.

The Tsunami
People have asked me whether I have any thoughts of why the Tsunami came – from a esoteric point of view. We know what caused it physically but what was the bigger picture it showed about our world. Like everyone else I was absolutely horrified and deeply upset by the scenes of families torn apart and destroyed by the disaster. I have cried for the mothers and fathers losing their children and for the orphans stranded and alone. Everyone who is part of a family felt their pain. When we see someone in trouble it can have two effects on us. Firstly we feel their pain and through this we empathise with them. Secondly this empathy or compassion as we call it – sends our love and tender feelings out to them. This will help them as the energy of our thoughts always goes to who we are thinking about. This will be a little bit of healing that they receive. With the world wide communications being so advanced now, everyone in the world with a TV has connected to the victims and so a huge “wave” of love and caring has gone out to them. Add this to the financial support we have all given and the result is a bonding between the distressed victims to the rest of the world. In a time where differences are marked by wars and civil strife it is good for humanity to have an opportunity to bond. So we can at least take heart that out of all the pain and suffering some good has come out of it. Let pray that we continue to bond and feel for each other as this is the way that the world will become the peaceful and loving place we all desire.
